The Ice Ring

Sabrina

“You did it!” I shout as Anaka nails her first bunny hop. “I knew you could!”

“You sure did,” Anaka says to me, a little breathless as she skates toward the boards and grabs her water bottle.

“I knew you could do it,” Tiffany says from the side of the rink, high-fiving her mom.

They sometimes take lessons together, and it’s the cutest thing. Today, though, it’s Anaka’s time, so I finish up her lesson as Tiffany heads to the arcade for the rest of it.

I kept the arcade—and honestly, most of the inside of the rink—but I renovated a little here and there. A new front counter. A new sign. And a new snack bar. With fruit, gummy bears, and bagels—among other things. It’s a good mix, and sometimes Luna helps me out and runs it after her lessons.

Today, though, when I’m done with Anaka, I change, then lock up Sunnyside Rink, running my finger over the key and the words: Skate With Joy.

It’s what I’ve always wanted. And what I’m finally having, thanks to a man who believed in me right from the start.

A man I have a date with right now.

I hop in my car and head to Cozy Valley. He asked me to meet him there, so I’m guessing we’ll go to the rink for a skate date—we kind of can’t get enough of those—or maybe to the bookstore, or to test out more of Mabel’s cookies that Corbin keeps bragging about. I swear he’s obsessed with those sweet treats, and I keep telling them to go into business together.

But when I turn off the highway into Cozy Valley, my phone rings.

It’s Tyler.

“Change of plans. Meet me at the Cozy Valley Inn,” he says when I answer it.

“Where we met…again,” I say with a fond smile.

“Exactly,” he says.

A few minutes later, I pull into the lot, cut the engine, and head inside.

It’s summertime, so I’m wearing jeans and a simple pink T-shirt—a far cry from my disheveled cartoonish wedding gown. My hair is looped back in a loose ponytail, and I make my way to the bar where a baseball game plays on the TV—just like it did that fateful day.

Tyler stares at the screen, studying it with intense scrutiny, giving me the chance to study him. His thick beard that I now know is scratchy and soft at the same time. His strong profile. His warm hazel eyes that see into my soul and make me feel safe. And his sturdy, strapping body that he uses for good.

So much good.

My heart beats faster as I walk over to my man. “Hey there. Is this seat taken?” I ask, patting the stool next to his.

He turns to me and flashes a cocky smile. “It is now.”

“Good. Let’s keep it that way,” I say and hop up onto the stool, liking the way this impromptu date is already feeling flirty, which is very on brand for us.

But the second I settle into the seat, he stands, brushes his palms against his jeans.

Then drops down to one knee.

My breath catches. My chest squeezes.

“Sabrina Snow, you are the big love of my life,” he says, looking up at me with nothing but vulnerability and passion in his irises. “You’re everything I didn’t know I needed, and you’ve made me happy in ways I wasn’t sure were possible. I didn’t know how powerful this kind of love could be until I met you. Everything is like sparks. Everything is like lightning. Every single day. And I want to be with you for the rest of our lives.”

He reaches into his pocket and takes out a velvet box, and I’m ready to shout yes, yes, yes.

But I press my lips together, letting him finish his proposal.

“Will you marry me?” he finally asks.

“Now,” I say, as happy tears stream down my cheeks. “I’d marry you now. I’d marry you tomorrow. I’ll marry you always.”

He slides the ring on my finger, and it’s stunning. A gorgeous, pale blue diamond that shimmers like ice—and my eyes.

“I love it so much. I love you so much,” I say as he rises, cups my cheeks, and seals his proposal with a kiss.

When he lets go, he grins. “We’ll have chocolate chip cookies for dessert and a kitten as a ring-bearer. And you’ll wear your tiara.”

I roll my eyes. “Obviously.”

And I do.
